Shakespeare's R&J
adapted by Joe Calarco
directed by Joanna Gerdy

December 12 - 21, 2001

Four Catholic schoolgirls, some red fabric, and a few copies of Romeo and Juliet. Chickspeare brings the essence of this classic play alive with the sheer theatricality of this timeless story of forbidden love. "Calarco sets the lush, lyrical story of doomed lovers in the repressed atmosphere of a modern Catholic boarding school. The result... is brave and original." ~ The New York Daily News Chickspeare announces its fall production, Shakespeare’s R&J, adapted by Joe Calarco. Shakespeare's R&J was a smash hit off-Broadway, and earned the distinction of being the longest running production of the story of Romeo and Juliet in New York history, on or off-Broadway. Originally set amid the backdrop of a boy’s parochial school, Chickspeare resets the play in a Catholic girl’s high school. The play centers around four rebellious students forbidden to read the play because of its subversive qualities. The deeper they delve into the story, the more they begin to live in the world of the play. What follows is an intense exploration of adolescent love in a play and world where that love is forbidden. Directed by Joanna Gerdy, Shakespeare’s R&J will be performed at Off-Tryon Theatre Company in NoDa at 8:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday December 12th - 14th, 19th - 21st. A special Pay-What-You-Can-Night will be held at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, December 18th. Tickets are $12 and $10 for Students and Seniors.
