Chickspeare, Charlotte’s all-female Shakespeare company, revives the most popular show in its six-year history, QUICKSPEARE, a medley of scene vignettes from William Shakespeare’s plays, for a two-week run, July 15-24, 2004, at the Hart-Witzen Gallery in NoDa, and an additional four-show run, July 29 – Aug. 1 at the Duke Power Theatre.  QUICKSPEARE will close the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center’s CITY STAGE fringe theatre festival at the Duke Power Theatre in Spirit Square, produced by Anne Lambert: http://www.blumenthalcenter.org/2005/summer.asp#City

Under the direction of Chickspeare Artistic Director Joanna Gerdy, QUICKSPEARE features scene vignettes from MACBETH, ROMEO & JULIET, and HAMLET, as well as stage combat, drumming, audience ‘sing-alongs,’ and a pop quiz.  It’s a fun, Bard-tastick good time!

Chickspeare will present QUICKSPEARE in performance at Hart-Witzen Gallery, 136 E. 36th Street in NoDa, on Thurs, Friday & Saturday at 8:00 pm, July 15 – 24, 2004.  Tickets: $15 per person.  For more information, visit the Hart-Witzen website at www.hartwitzengallery.com.

Following the NoDa run, Quickspeare will be presented by the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center as the closing show for the CITY STAGE fringe theatre festival.  Performances are in the Duke Power Theatre in Spirit Square Center for the Arts, 345 N. College St., July 29 – Aug. 1, Thurs, Friday & Saturday at 8:00 pm, and Sunday at 2:00 pm.  Single tickets: $19.99; subscriptions are available to the four-week CITY STAGE festival.  Call the Spirit Square Box Office at (704) 372-1000 or go online at blumenthalcenter.org.

The July cast will include many of your favorite Chicks, including: Sheila Snow Proctor, Andrea King, Meghan Lowther, Donna Scott, and Joanna Gerdy, as well as some new faces.

QUICKSPEARE was originally produced in Charlotte Nov. 12 & 13, 1998 at the Great Aunt Stella Center and Jan. 15 & 16, 1999 at the Johnson Brewery.  The original cast included: Andrea Atkins, Jennifer Bailey, Lane Morris, Karen Martin, Nicia Carla, Lolly Foy, Joanna Gerdy, Anne Lambert, Shelia Snow Proctor, Allison Wright, with director Joanna Gerdy.

Since 1998, Chickspeare has presented innovative all-female productions of Shakespeare’s classics, including AS YOU LIKE IT, directed by Anne Lambert, at the Carolina Theatre, MACBETH, directed by Gina Stewart, at the Great Aunt Stella Center, and HENRY IV, directed by Joanna Gerdy, at the Johnson Brewery.  In residence at Off-Tryon Theatre Company in NoDa from 2001-2004, Chickspeare has produced productions of TWELFTH NIGHT (dir. Joanna Gerdy), JULIUS CAESAR (dir. Ashley Kerns) and THE WINTER’S TALE (dir. Glenn Griffin).  Chickspeare does Shakespeare much as Shakespeare did Shakespeare, on simple stages and with natural lighting, inviting the actors and the audience to see each other, and often, interact with each other.

Other Chickspeare productions of contemporary plays with all-female casts, like Paula Vogel’s DESDEMONA and Maria Irene Fornes’ FEFU & HER FRIENDS, explore women’s experiences.  Chickspeare shows have featured some of Charlotte’s most celebrated theatre talent, including Sheila Snow Proctor, Nicia Carla, Laura Depta, Chandler McIntyre, Joanna Gerdy, Lolly Foy, Meghan Lowther, Andrea King, Beth Pierce, Johanna Jowett, Julie Janorschke, Carolyn Dempsey, Meg Wood and Anne Lambert.  The company has been recognized with several Creative Loafing Theatre nominations and Awards over the past five years, including recognition for Theatre Events of the Year for FEFU & HER FRIENDS in 2001 and the DESDEMONA/OTHELLO-THON, co-produced with BareBones Theatre Group, in 2002.  Sheila Snow Proctor and Nicia Carla have both been recognized as Actress of the Year.  In 2002, Chickspeare shared Creative Loafing Theatre Company of the Year honors with BareBones and Off-Tryon Theater Company; company co-founder Anne Lambert was named Theatre Person of the Year by Creative Loafing in 2002.
